Silicone Moulds

Silicone can last long, really long. But just not with Epoxy. Epoxy cause an exothermic chemical reaction as it cures, and this reacts with the Silicone surface. Eventually the molecules of Silicone start to break down, leaving a whitish film and diminishing the properties of the Silicone, to the point where there is a chance of your Epoxy Artwork sticking. A lot of producers try and hide this film by keeping the Silicone it’s natural colour - white. However we want you to be aware of when it’s time to replace your mould, and not have your hard worked artwork ruined by it being stuck to the mould.

This is my favorite question to answer and it’s simple. A highly glossy mould with a great surface finish can mean you don’t need to use a top coat! This saves you both time, and money (as we know how long it takes for epoxy to cure, and it ain’t cheap!). Once the mould surface starts to dull, you can start using a release agent, but unfortunately good quality release agent’s aren’t easily available in India and also it will dull your surface anyway. So we price our moulds so that it’s actually easier (and cheaper!)  to replace the entire mould than spend time working on the surface finishes with manual sanding and top coats!

The answer to this question depends on many factors like - Epoxy mixing quality, Grade of Epoxy, Heat Introduced, etc. In general, a poor quality mould may only last a few castings. However if better quality Silicone is used, you should be able to get 8+ castings before the mould needs to be replaced. If your Silicone mould is still releasing well but the glossy surface has gotten dull, you can do a sanding and top coat to get that beautiful transparency back.

Silicone moulds are a consumable item, and therefore we cannot offer a warranty on them as there are many factors that can affect it’s life. All our moulds are inspected before they leave our factory, but in the rare case you get a defective piece you can contact us and we’ll be happy to replace it for free! Please read our returns/refunds for more information.

Unfortunately, no. The glossy surface is a result of the shiny (and expensive) master moulds we use to create this product. Once any abrasion or greasy surface (yes even fingerprints) touch the mould, you will lose the shine, maybe forever. So Silicone Moulds need to be handled with care, and you need to refrain from washing them or even wiping with any cloth. In our experience the only cloth that can help clean some smudges is using a good quality Microfiber cloth with minimal pressure.

Silicone cannot be recycled. Once it is vulcanized (cooked) it turns into a shape that cannot change. But it is not harmful to the environment, because unlike plastics, Silicone will not break down into microplastics.

Silicone is made from the elements Silicone Dioxide, which is sand. It is one of the most abundant elements in the world. Glass is also made up of the same thing! So when your Silicone moulds need to be discarded, and if they end up in a dumping ground, you can be assured that they will not degrade into any harmful by products, but simply turn back into sand. Silicone will take a long time to decompose, so instead of throwing your old Silicone moulds away, The Mould Story is happy to receive your old Silicone moulds and recycle them for you through our industry partners.
